We will return to Fort Chaplin. Here we explore one of the upland terrace gravel forests of the Fort Circle. We see, under the canopy of Chestnut Oak and White Oak, the typical understory of mountain laurel, blueberry, and azalea as well as a few less frequently appearing species such as sweetbells and staggerbush.

Because of a fire which occurred here a number of years ago, the forest floor is sparse which highlights the survivors and those species which take advantage of disturbance to get a foothold.
