Learning to recognize our native trees is a process much like getting to know your neighbors. In any location in central Maryland, there are probably less than two dozen species, and in fall they put on their most distinctive dress to help us out. C. Ritchie Bell, one of the fathers of the native plant movement, and photographer Anne Lindsey put together a great field guide for beginners, "Fall Color and Woodland Harvests," with an easy key and superbly useful photographs.
