144th walk in the Wild Washington- Forts series

Continuing our series of visits to Civil War Fort sites in Washington, DC we will return to FORT CHAPLIN. Always a very special trip in Spring, but since we were rained out in May, we will visit in September to observe and record the progress of this young forested area where the presence of invasive plants have not overwhelmed the site.  We see the beauties of the Terrace Gravel forest in blueberries, huckleberries, mountain laurels, staggerbush, sweetbells; all under the sheltering leaves of Chestnut oaks, white oaks, sassafras, black gum and many other trees.

Leaders: Mary Pat Rowan and David Culp
