MNPS Field Trip: Civil War Fort Site: Fort Slocum

  • 06/10/2012
  • 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  • 5700 Kansas Ave NW, Washington, DC

We will return again to FORT SLOCUM. This Fort Park is in the Northwest quadrant of the city bounded by Kansas Avenue to the east and 3rd Street to the west. It is two blocks wide and, at least, two or three blocks long. Though surrounded by lawn, the central part of the park is heavily wooded with gigantic upland oaks and hickories and understory of the typical terrace gravel forest. A delightful walk in the woods for field botanists and naturalists.

Leaders: Mary Pat Rowan and Lou Aronica

Directions: The address is officially 5700 Kansas Avenue NW if you want to google it. If not, get to Kansas Avenue NW between Nicholson and Madison and those with cars can park on the east side of Kansas Av. between Nicholson and Madison, across from the park.

Bring: Water and lunch.

Note: Easy to moderate walk but dress for possibility of poison ivy and greenbriar. Trip will be cancelled if there is rain. If you have any questions, call Mary Pat in the morning of the walk before 9 am to check to see if walk will go on. Registration is not necessary so no one will be alerted to a weather cancellation.

Contact: Mary Pat Rowan, blair-rowan@starpower.net, 202 526 8821.

Registration is not required.
