Title: MNPS Field Trip: Fort Bayard CANCELLED

Leader: Mary Pat Rowan

FORT BAYARD is located on the edge of NW Washington D.C. where Western Avenue meets River Road.  It is one of the Civil War Forts on high ground but seems to not be a terrace gravel site.  For that reason tree species there are different from those we see at the other Fort Circle Parks.  The large and old trees appear to be from the civil war era but exhibit a different underlying geology.

Because it is often quite cold at this time in December, I have shortened the trip and will bring hot chocolate and hot coffee for all which we can enjoy at the end of the trip at the picnic benches in this park-like setting.

This trip continues the series of field trips started many years ago by Mary Pat Rowan and Lou Aronica to explore the parks of Washington, DC.

DIRECTIONS: Moving toward WDC from Montgomery County on River Road continue past WDC line but stay in the right hand lane so you can veer to the right onto 46th Street NW.  Make an almost immediate right turn on Fessenden Street and park there alongside the southern edge of the park. Or, if coming west on Western Avenue, turn left onto River Road and stay in right lane to veer onto 46th as above.  If none of the above work, google the 4600 block of Fessenden Street NW, follow their directions and park on Fessenden.  We will meet on Fessenden at the south edge of Fort Bayard Park.

Bring Water and Lunch or Snack. Easy to moderate walk. Cancelled if raining but call Sunday morning before 9 am if weather is uncertain and you are concerned about cancellation.
