144th walk in the Wild Washington- Forts series

Continuing our series of visits to Civil War Fort sites in Washington, DC we will return to FORT CHAPLIN. Always a very special trip in Spring, but since we were rained out in May, we will visit in September to observe and record the progress of this young forested area where the presence of invasive plants have not overwhelmed the site.  We see the beauties of the Terrace Gravel forest in blueberries, huckleberries, mountain laurels, staggerbush, sweetbells; all under the sheltering leaves of Chestnut oaks, white oaks, sassafras, black gum and many other trees.

Leaders: Mary Pat Rowan and David Culp

    REGISTRATION IS NOT REQUIRED

    FREE

Notes: Easy to moderate walk but remember we may encounter poison ivy so dress accordingly.

Bring: Water and lunch or a snack.

These include New Jersey Pine Barrens, upland mesic woods, wetlands, and various types of acidic seepage bogs. The Refuge is home to over 1200 species of vascular plants at last count.

Registration is restricted to the fall conference attendees. Directions will be provided at the conference. Transportation is by private vehicles.

The North Tract of the Greenbelt Forest Preserve is a 100 acre parcel of the forest that once surrounded the City of Greenbelt. This woodland holds remnant pine barren communities--globally-rare communities which are considered ancient outliers of New Jersey Pine Barrens. We’ll hike up Blueberry Hill to view the Oak-Heath-Pine Forest and look for extensive stands of various ericads, as well as Chinquapin, Dwarf Chinquapin Oak, Pitch Pine, and view a few rare acidic seepage communities which are considered ancient outliers of New Jersey Pine Barrens.

Suitland Bog, located just inside the Capital Beltway, is the best preserved of more than than ten bogs historically reported in Prince Georges County. Although small, it is carefully managed by the Park and Planning Commission. Once containing over 40 plants on the state rare list, Suitland Bog still harbors about twenty rare species. including red milkweed, rose pogonia, northern pitcher-plant, and bog goldenrod. The main area of this bog is traversed on a wooden walkway and other areas involve walking along the edges of the bog.

Easy, natural surface trails, short drive to the site 24-acre Wooded Hillock on the north edge of the campus contains an urban forest and a good example of a once-common terrace gravel forest. These elevated areas of gravelly acidic soils tend to have a diversity of oak trees, with blueberries and huckleberries in the understory. It was threatened by development, but thanks to the efforts of Dr. McIntosh and groups like MNPS, the forest has been preserved and being used as a natural classroom to understand biodiversity and our native forests.

Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) protects some of the most rare biodiversity in the DC region. The BARC Pine Barrens comprises a southern extension of the range of this rare vegetation type. There are both upland and lowland Pine Barrens at BARC, the latter a wetland sandy soil plant community. We will also see a variety of trees, and the forest understory has remarkable diversity of heaths, ferns and other native plants.

With a diversity of habitats of the coastal plain, Buck Lodge harbors many rare and uncommon plants, a pristine oak- chestnut-heath forest, low-lying seepage forest, and old-age terrace gravel forest. The forests are dominated by chestnut oak, scarlet oak, blackgum, hollies, pines and a diversity of heath. See the efforts of Park Rangers and the Maryland Sierra Club working to save this natural area. Note: No Restrooms at this location

This once-forgotten river is becoming the center of a movement to restore it as a public asset in the nation's capital. The Anacostia protects unique eco-systems: riverine tidal swamp forests, tidal emergent wetlands and the adjacent non-tidal wetlands that protect outstanding wetland plant communities and provide habitat to a plethora of fish and other animals.

The AWS Headquarters are located at the historic George Washington House (circa 1752). Years of road realignments had created poor drainage patterns throughout the site. AWS installed permeable paving, a rainwater cistern, brick and dry stream channels, and rain gardens. The project demonstrates how sustainable storm water management can be successfully incorporated within historic sites challenged with a limited budget and very restrictive site constraints.

We will hike the Seneca Creek Greenway Trail starting from Route 28.  We will explore the wooded bluffs and overgrown meadows above Seneca Creek, and perhaps venture as far as the wooded slopes leading to Black Rock Mill.  This stretch of trail has many invasives and we will search for the natives that can survive and even thrive under these conditions.

The leader cannot promise to provide unlimited botanical expertise, but we will have fun pooling our plant knowledge and learning together.

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Limited to 15.

Notes: This is a moderate hike with some up-and-down walking and moderately steep slopes.

Join MNPS and natural history author Melanie Choukas-Bradley for our first Shinrin-Yoku or Forest Bathing walk and learn about the health benefits of spending time immersed in nature.

We will meet in the Pinehurst Branch area of Rock Creek Park for a quiet, slow walk through the floodplain forest. While we will walk beneath tall trees and see autumn wildflowers blooming, Melanie says that Shinrin-Yoku is “more about being than IDing.”

Numerous health studies in Japan, North America and around the world have demonstrated measurable improvements in physical health and mood following sensory immersion in nature, including lowered blood pressure, lowered levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increased immunity to disease.

Melanie will share some simple techniques she has learned to help us connect more deeply with the beauty and wonder of Rock Creek Park and its tree canopy.  She has a lightweight portable forest bathing stool to lend to each participant for the duration of the walk. We will be sitting by Pinehurst Branch for part of the time.

Feel free to contact Melanie mailto:mcb@melaniechoukas-bradley.com if you have any questions about the walk.

    Leader:  Melanie Choukas-Bradley

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Limited to 15.
