    • 04/29/2017
    • 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
    • Catoctin Mountain Park, MD

Sponsoring Organization: Maryland Native Plant Society

Catoctin Mountain Park was established in the 1930's.  The trip leader started going to the park in 1973 and led wildflower walks there until about 1990.  He recently found that there is no record for Pink Lady's Slipper (Cypripedium acaule) and only one vague record from about 1971 for Large Whorled Pogonia (Isotria verticillata).  He feels that they can probably both be found on Catoctin Mountain (the eastern and only named ridge in the park).

Catoctin Mountain is primarily Weverton Quartzite composed primarily of silica, the same compound with makes up sand. It makes a poor, acid soil which mainly supports an Oak-Hickory forest with a heath understory. Higher up, several pine species are added.

We will start on the connecting trail at the end of the Visitors' Center parking lot and follow it to Wolf Rock Trail. We will then take Wolf Rock Trail up to Wolf Rock and then take the connecting trail to Chimney Rock. This will be the first time the leader has seen either of these overlooks in person. We will take the Chimney Rock Trail down to the parking area by Camp Peniel. The leader will leave a car there for ferrying drivers back to the Visitors' Center parking lot.

The leader asks that one car come a few minutes early so that he can put a car at Camp Peniel and get back to the Visitors' Center parking lot.

148th walk in the Wild Washington- Forts series

Continuing our series of visits to Civil War Fort sites in Washington, DC we will return to FORT CHAPLIN. Always a very special trip in May, because wild flowers are in bloom.

We will also be in one of the best forests in the Fort Circle and see much more than wildflowers. Under the canopy of chestnut oaks and white oaks, we will notice the typical understory of mountain laurel, blueberry, and azalea as well as a few less frequently appearing species such as sweetbells and staggerbush.

Virginia pine along with other pioneering species and patches of sparse forest floor remind us of a fire that occurred in a not too distant past.

Leaders: Liz Matthews, Allen Browne and Claudine Lebeau

    REGISTRATION IS NOT REQUIRED

    FREE

Notes: Easy to moderate walk but remember we may encounter poison ivy so dress accordingly.

Bring: Water and lunch or a snack.

This small forest is named in memory of a son of Charles E. Miller, Howard County politician and businessman. Don Miller was president of Miller Chevrolet and was interested in trees and other plants. One must get permission to visit this small stream valley.

It contains a diversity of species: spring beauty, fringe tree, blackhaw viburnum, arrowwood, mapleleaf viburnum, spicebush, oak, hickory, red maple, dogwood, black gum, ash, tulip tree, beech, wild geranium, false solomon's seal, bedstraw, jack-in-the-pulpit, mayapple, New York fern, sensitive fern, blackberry, black cohosh and sedges.

This is the sixth year that we will explore this area as we add to our survey of its flora and note changes over time.  Learn to identify plants with a botanist who can answer your questions.  The field trip will be facilitated by Charlie Davis and Heidi Pringle.  Charlie Davis is a professional field ecologist who specializes in plants.  Heidi has studied a little botany.

    Leader: Heidi Pringle

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Limited to 10.

    FREE

Notes:  A climb down a small, slippery, steep hill is necessary to enter the forest. There is also a stream crossing that requires a big step over the shallow stream. There are only animal trails, and participants are asked to be very careful not to step on the native plants. The leader has encountered only one tick, but tick populations change each year and there are many deer. Please take precautions for ticks. Wear long pants, since there is an area with poison ivy that must be crossed. There are muddy areas.

Bring:  hand lens, pad and pencil/pen, rain gear, boots

Cancellation Policy: In the event of heavy rain, the walk will be postponed. Check this event announcement for cancellation information.

This park on South Mountain near the Appalachian Trail gets heavy traffic of summer visitors to its 42-acre stream-fed lake and beach. However, there are many native species to ID and record in the woodland areas near the lake. Of note is the variety of ferns that flourish in the shaded, moist habitat.

Created by a meander in the Youghiogheny River, this 100-acre peninsula is a unique habitat that contains many rare and interesting plants. The Youghiogheny River flows north, picking up seeds in Maryland and West Virginia and depositing them at Ferncliff, north of their usual growing range. The deep gorge is slightly warmer than the surrounding area, which allows these southern refugees to survive. Recognized for its botanical diversity for over a century, the 100-acre peninsula was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1973.

    • Elk Ridge Native Plant Preserve, Garret County, MD
Field Trip: Exploring Elk Ridge in Fall
Leaders: Liz McDowell & Ron Boyer, Western Mountains Chapter of MNPS

This forested ridge in Garrett County lies within the Mid-Atlantic Highlands, the largest interior hardwood forest in the world's temperate latitudes. Landowner efforts to preserve regional biodiversity have helped protect several uncommon plants and animals on this conserved land adjacent to the Savage River State Forest. Native plants in fall color will be the focus during this moderate walk along mostly forested trails with beautiful views. A species list will be recorded and shared with participants.

Participants should wear trail shoes, carry their own water, use tick spray and bring a walking stick. Sorry, but no pets are allowed and no rest rooms are available.

Registration is required but is not available through this website. To minimize impacts group size is limited, so please contact Liz by email at lmcdnativeplants@hughes.net or phone at 301-895-3686 to register.
