Field Trips

Want to Host a Field Trip?

A Field Trip Host knows of an interesting location and knows where to park and where the trails lead. Participants bring their knowledge. They may know plants, butterflies, birds, or rocks. The trip ends up being an adventure and learning experience for everyone.

If you have a favorite place you would like to share with others, please contact fieldtrips @ mdflora.org. We'll help you set it up. Consider using this form to submit information for an event

North America is home to over 200 orchid species, and more than half are endangered or threatened somewhere in their native range. The North American Orchid Conservation Center (NAOCC) was established by the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Botanic Garden to assure the survival of all native orchids in the U.S. and Canada.

This informal presentation will discuss the work of the NAOCC and projects in its pipeline, followed by a tour of the NAOCC lab for a discussion of orchid propagation and the importance of fungi in this process.

For the second year in a row, we will tour vacant lot sites that are part of the West Baltimore Wildflower Project. This is the second year of this collaborative project, whose goal is to transform vacant lots into low-maintenance, attractive green spaces that bring natural beauty into urban neighborhoods and positively impact the environment.

Vacant lots in this area have been planted with seed mixes of primarily native wildflowers and warm-season bunch grasses. We will discuss what grows in these environments without direct human intervention as well as what we are attempting to alter through our treatments. We will also discuss the process to establish this project, the progress made, and more generally, the use of vacant lots and other urban brownfields as habitat restoration and conservation areas for native plants.

Leader: Anna Johnson PhD, Univ Md-Baltimore Co, and MNPS 2013 grant recipient

    • New Germany State Park, MD

Talk: The Shifting Paradigm of American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) Conservation in Pennsylvania

Speaker: Dr. Eric Burkhart, Program Director for Plant Science, Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, Penn State University

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) is a native North American forest plant whose root is harvested for the international medicinal plant trade. Dr. Burkhart will share results from his decade-long studies of Pennsylvania’s evolving ginseng industry. The history, importance, and complexity of the industry will be discussed along with the current status of one of North America’s most valuable, and vulnerable, plants. Dr. Burkhart will conclude by sharing current efforts within Pennsylvania to track the wild ginseng supply and help conserve this species through ‘verified’ agroforestry production.

Field Trip Exploring New Germany in Fall
Following his program, Dr. Burkhart will lead interested persons on an exploration of New Germany State Park. This mountain gem lies along Meadow Mountain, the eastern Continental Divide. Its many trails pass through a variety of habitats: hemlock and mixed hardwood forests, rhododendron covered streams, old field, and lakeshore. Autumn flowers, fruits, fall colors, and fungi will be the focus during this easy to moderate walk.

This free event is open to the public. It is sponsored by MNPS in cooperation with New Germany State Park. For more details, contact Liz McDowell at lmcdnativeplants @ hughes.net

    Registration is not required.

Directions: From I-68 take exit 22 and follow signs for New Germany State Park. Turn left into the park onto McAndrews Hill Road. The program will be held in the Lake House and the walk will leave from there.
