    • 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
    • Rachel Carson Conservation Park, Montgomery County
    • 17

Sponsoring Organization: Maryland Native Plant Society

If we are lucky, Rachel Carson's famous wild azaleas (pinxters) will be in full bloom.  We'll see what is going on inside some of the five deer exclosures and walk along the Hawlings River.  The terrain includes meadows, rocky hilltops, and bottomland; so a variety of spring flowers and ferns will be seen.  Expect to see and hear a variety of birds.  A lovely picnic spot is included.

    Leader:  Steve Parks
Dr. Parks has taken on stewardship duties at the park, erecting and maintaining deer protection for some areas and plants, and suppressing some invasive species.  He knows some of the native species at RCCP, and trusts that participants in the walk will help identify the rest.

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Limited to 18.

Registration through May 9  for members only.

    FREE

Notes:   Most of the trail is well graded but we will encounter some mud.

Bring: Bring a picnic, skeeter repellent, and wear mud shoes. Binoculars and loupe may be handy.

This forest is named in memory of a son of Charles E. Miller, Howard County politician and businessman.  Don Miller was president of Miller Chevrolet and was interested in trees and plants.  One must get permission to visit this small stream valley.  It contains a diversity of species: spring beauty, fringe tree, blackhaw viburnum, arrowwood, mapleleaf viburnum, spicebush, oak, hickory, red maple, dogwood, black gum, ash, tulip tree, beech, wild geranium, false solomon's seal, bedstraw, jack-in-the-pulpit, mayapple, New York fern, sensitive fern, blackberry, black cohosh, and sedges. This is the 4th year that we will explore this area, to add to our survey of its flora and note changes over time.

    Leader:  Heidi Pringle

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Limited to 10.

Registration through May 7 for members only.

    FREE

Notes:   A climb down a small steep hill is necessary to enter the forest.  There is a stream to cross with one large step.

There are only animal trails, and participants are asked to be very careful not to step on the native plants.

Leader has encountered only one tick, but tick populations change each year and there are many deer.  Please take precautions for ticks.

Wear long pants, since there is an area with poison ivy that must be crossed.

Bring: Recommend pad and pencil or pen, rain gear, hand lens, boots.

Cancellation Policy: In the event of heavy rain, the walk will be postponed.  Please call if in doubt about cancellation.

Want to Host a Field Trip?

A Field Trip Host knows of an interesting location and knows where to park and where the trails lead. Participants bring their knowledge. They may know plants, butterflies, birds, or rocks. The trip ends up being an adventure and learning experience for everyone.

If you have a favorite place you would like to share with others, please contact fieldtrips @ mdflora.org. We'll help you set it up. Consider using this form to submit information for an event

Volunteer to Collect Plant Information on Field Trips

Volunteers are needed to help create these plant lists. See our Volunteer page for more information.

We create and publish lists of plants observed at various field trip sites. You can find them atField Trip Plant ListsYou can download and print them and take them with you. The number of lists will grow steadily, so be patient if you don't see one for your site now.
