Scheduled programs & activities highlight native plants & biodiversity!

Educational programs geared for adults & teens!

10:30 to 11:30 - Vanessa Beauchamp, Associate Professor of Biology, Towson University Department of Biological Sciences - Invisible Connections: An Introduction to Parasitic Plants While most plants make the food they need through photosynthesis, some plants steal their nutrition from other plants. This program will focus on the various types of parasitic plants native to Maryland, from mistletoe high in the canopy to Indian pipe and beechdrops in the shaded forest understory.

12 noon to 1:00 - Linda Harris, Conservation Committee Chair, Mountain Laurel Garden Club - Partnering with Schools and Organizations on Conservation and Education Projects - The MLGC conservation committee works with both Northern Garrett High School and the Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park where they carry out different conservation projects with students. Harris will describe how to initiate these relationships and form lasting partnerships.

1:30 to 2:30 Candy DeBerry, Professor of Biology, Washington & Jefferson College -Chickadees, Bees, and Butterflies: The Latest Research on Native Plants and Their Impact on Biodiversity - Did you know… Yards with fewer than 70% native plants do not attract enough insects to support chickadees feeding their young? Hedgerows composed of non-native trees and shrubs host 91% fewer insects? Cutting back one-third of milkweed plants in mid-June and another one-third in mid-July increases egg-laying by monarch butterflies because of the tender new growth? Learn more about these studies and other recent research on native plants and how you can use them to support biodiversity.
