By mid-spring the trees have leafed out and the meadow is beginning to flower.  We will saunter through the meadow and take a somewhat longer than usual hike on a loop trail in the upland woods in order to see a large group of Wild Sarsaparilla.

This is part of an ongoing series of MNPS walks to develop an informal inventory of plants and bloom times in Little Bennett Regional Park.

Leaders:  Sujata Roy, Allen Browne and Anne DeNovo

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Limited to 18.

Join us in celebrating the life and accomplishments of Rachel Carson on her 110th Birthday by exploring the history and flora of the Rachel Carson House and Rachel Carson Greenway. Born May 27, 1907, Rachel Carson was an accomplished marine biologist, author and conservation pioneer.

Dr. Diana Post and Clifford Hall of The Rachel Carson Landmark Alliance invites the Maryland Native Plant Society for a tour of the Rachel Carson House National Historic Landmark in Silver Spring where Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring, published 55 years ago.

We will start with a tour of the house and scenic yard, followed by a short walk along the Rachel Carson Greenway in the Northwest Branch Stream Valley Park Best Natural Area. This spectacular, scenic, steep sided, stream valley was a favorite of both President Theodore Roosevelt and Rachel Carson.

The entrance to the Greenway trail at the end of Quaint Acres Drive will lead us to a dense hillside of mountain laurels and other heath along the trail overlooking the stream. If we are lucky, we will catch the Mountain Laurels in full bloom as well as other wildflowers.

Leaders: Michael Ellis, Diana Post and Clifford Hall

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Limited to 20.

    FREE

Notes:  This is not an Open House, please arrive at 10am if you wish to join the tour.

149th walk in the Wild Washington- Forts series

We will return to the wonderful vegetation of Oxon Run Bog.  Though not a Civil War Fort this is a magnolia bog below a terrace gravel formation (like the upland Fort sites).

“Acidic and mossy seeps, magnolia bogs occur only below gravel terraces of the inner mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain. Closely associated with terrace gravel forests, these wetlands usually occupy less than an acre on slopes comprised of soils deposited millions of years ago by the Potomac River. Water infiltration and leaching has left the soils acidic and free of the organic materials that characterize true peat bogs. When water percolates from the upland sands and gravels over an impervious layer of clay, downward flow is prevented, and moisture is directed out of the hillside. This hydro-geology creates optimal conditions for bog formation.” National Park Service

Please be warned this is far from a moderate walk. This is a trail-less site with difficult and thickly vegetated terrain. We will walk in wet areas.

Leaders: Jim Rosenstock, Allen Browne, Claudine Lebeau

    REGISTRATION IS NOT REQUIRED

    FREE

    Notes: Uneven and wet ground.

Bring: Lunch and water.  Wear appropriate shoes and clothing.   You may want to have bug spray.

Cancellation Policy: Cancelled if raining, but call Claudine  Lebeau at 240 472 2803 Sunday morning before 9:00 AM if in doubt.

Contact: (for additional information; not to register) Claudine Lebeau at Claudine_l_lebeau@yahoo.com

Directions: In Southeast Washington DC, we will meet on the upper parking deck of the Southern Avenue Metro Station which is on the Metro Green Line. If you drive, parking is abundant there and free on Sunday.

    • Elk Ridge Native Plant Preserve, Garret County, MD
Field Trip: Exploring Elk Ridge in Fall
Leaders: Liz McDowell & Ron Boyer, Western Mountains Chapter of MNPS

This forested ridge in Garrett County lies within the Mid-Atlantic Highlands, the largest interior hardwood forest in the world's temperate latitudes. Landowner efforts to preserve regional biodiversity have helped protect several uncommon plants and animals on this conserved land adjacent to the Savage River State Forest. Native plants in fall color will be the focus during this moderate walk along mostly forested trails with beautiful views. A species list will be recorded and shared with participants.

Participants should wear trail shoes, carry their own water, use tick spray and bring a walking stick. Sorry, but no pets are allowed and no rest rooms are available.

Registration is required but is not available through this website. To minimize impacts group size is limited, so please contact Liz by email at lmcdnativeplants@hughes.net or phone at 301-895-3686 to register.
