MNPS Field Trip: Hug a Tree- Maryland's Biggest, Plus a Few Other Champs (Friday)

Come see Maryland’s largest known tree, an American sycamore near the Potomac River in Dickerson Conservation Park, upper Montgomery County. Coincidentally, located between it and the river is the Montgomery County champion cottonwood and nearby on the C&O Canal is the county’s champion silver maple. We’ll begin by meeting at Seneca Creek State Park to see the county champion osage orange and then carpool, stopping along the way, to see two other champs- a catalpa and Douglas fir. Optional: Meet at Dickerson Conservation Park at 2:30 p.m. if you only want to see the sycamore, cottonwood and silver maple.

A new MNPS member, Ralph has nominated several large trees that are now included in the Montgomery County Champion Tree Register after honing his tree ID skills on numerous expert-led hikes. 

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Limited to 25. 

Notes:   Moderate level of difficulty (possible muddy conditions); hiking boots recommended.
