MNPS Field Trip: Cheverly Nature Park (Sunday)

  • 02/18/2018
  • 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
  • Cheverly Prince George's County, MD

Sponsoring Organization: Maryland Native Plant Society and The Cheverly Green Infrastructure Committee

Leader: Matt T. Salo

These nature hikes, coupled with the Great Backyard Bird Count of local birds on four days (2/16-2/20/18) are co-sponsored by the Maryland Native Plant Society and Cheverly Green Infra-structure Science Committee. In addition to birds, we will be identifying trees and plants. This is a great chance to get outdoors, learn about birds, trees, and other plants, and enjoy what nature has to offer.

Directions: Approach Cheverly from either south or north on Baltimore-Washington Parkway; take the exit for Cheverly onto Rte 202 (Landover Rd), head east a few hundred feet and turn right onto Cheverly Ave heading south.  Watch out for a speed camera on your left. Continue for six blocks to Forest Road( after a small park on your left).

Turn right on Forest Rd and continue 3 blocks until the road splits; stay to the right and continue straight ahead for 2 more blocks passing Crest Ave and then turn right onto Tremont Ave; go to its end and park on the street. [GPS orientation - near 3398 at end of Tremont Ave, Cheverly, MD; owners are not associated with the hike].

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS NOT REQUIRED.

Bring:  You will need a pair of binoculars.  Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather. Bird or plant guides and snacks optional.

Notes:  Fairly easy walking on good trails, but there are some slopes to climb.

Cancellation Policy:  Trip will go in light drizzle but will be cancelled for heavy precipitation, wind or other inclement weather. Call 301-341-1261 if in doubt.

Other Hikes: If you are an experienced hiker and don't mind difficult, rough, cross-country terrain, you may also join Matt on other days for additional hikes along Lower Beaverdam Creek (rubber boots a must), or around Euclid Woods and the PG County Hospital hill. Both morning and afternoon hikes are possible. Please call 301-341-1261 ahead for times and directions.

If you can't make it to any of the outings, you can simply observe and document plants and count birds around your home or neighborhood during any of the four days and still make a contribution to citizen science.
