The Serpentine Barrens of the Northern Piedmont: A World Class Ecosystem with a Heart of Stone

Workshop at Nottingham County Park, 150 Park Road, Nottingham, PA 19362

Instructor: Dr. Roger Latham

Learn about the origins and ecology of serpentine barrens, globally rare ecosystems with unique vegetation growing on soils weathered from ultramafic rocks, and the restoration and stewardship of these geological, ecological and cultural treasures.  Few of these grasslands and pine-oak woodlands remain, mostly in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
