General Description, from the leader, Joe Metzger: Supplement to Year of the Grass. I don't feel the need to attempt to identify or even recognize any more of the Grasses so I am ignoring this group which has been made the "MNPS Plant of the Year" and instead I'm going to concentrate on another but smaller group of plants with equally small, insignificant flowers. I am declaring this the Unofficial Season of the Alum Root (Heuchera spp.). The MD Checklist recognizes 3 species and considers 2 more possible but in need of study: American Alum Root (H. americana), Purple Alum Root (H. hispida) and Downy Alum Root (H. pubescens) with Hairy Alum Root (H. villosa) which is currently excluded and White Alum Root (H. alba aka H. pubescens var. brachyandra) which is found in VA, WV and PA and is in need of study. Late last year, a photograph which I put on iNaturalist as American Alum Root was identified as White Alum Root. This is a scouting field trip to locate as many populations of Alum Root as possible, regardless of species.
