Title: Oaks of Maryland-What's Quirky About Quercus?
Speaker: Christopher Puttock, PhD.
Twenty one mid-Atlantic region native species of oaks are currently known from Maryland, plus several exotic species are also used as parkland and street trees. Dr. Puttock will take us through the morphological tool-kit needed by the amateur naturalist and professional botanist to have any hope in identifying these sometimes difficult species, and thus avoiding the common quercus refrain “it’s a hybrid”.
Dr. Puttock is a botanist with more than 35 years experience in flora writing, herbarium management, and marine and terrestrial environmental conservation. He is the President of the Botanical Society of Washington and a MNPS board member. He is currently working on an electronic key of the North American paper daisies (the Asteraceae tribe Gnaphalieae); the status of ginseng in Maryland; and preparing a book on Maryland oaks. His passion is in the landscape restoration of matrix plants and animals without which the sustainability of the rare and declining will never be achieved.

Directions: From the Washington Beltway (I-495)
Take Exit 33, Connecticut Avenue, north to the third signal after the Beltway. Turn left onto Knowles and go 2 1/2 blocks to the library on the right.
The meeting is open to non-members.
