Title: MNPS Field Trip: National Arboretum
Leader: Mary Pat Rowan
We will return to the National Arboretum to explore the terrace gravel cap on Mt. Hamilton, (one of the high points in DC not used as a fort in the Civil War) as well as the natural slopes leading to the Anacostia River. We will continue our winter tree identification and find the Malus coronaria ( native crab-apple) grove on the west slope of Mt. Hamilton. We may venture into Fern Valley to ID more oaks and heaths if we have time. If cold, we may end the trip in a coffee shop to talk about what we saw in a cozy setting.
Directions: Enter the National Arboretum from the R Street Gate off Bladensburg Road NE and park in the lot just inside the gate.
Contact: Mary Pat Rowan, blair-rowan@starpower.net, 202 526 8821.
Bring: Snack, water. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing.
The trip will be cancelled in the event of rain or extreme cold, but will not be cancelled for light snow. Call Mary Pat before 9 in the morning if in doubt.
Registration is not required.
