  • 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  • Preston (CAROLINE CO) and Centreville (QUEEN ANNE'S CO)

Sponsoring Organization: Natural History Society of Maryland (NHSM)

Leader: Jayne Ash (NHSM)

Description:    This field trip will be led by NHSM. The group will explore two sites in the Eastern Shore: John S. Ayton State Nursery and White Marsh Park Edible Garden.

The John S. Ayton State Nursery grows three million trees each year and ships 250,000 in a day during the harvest season. The tour will visit this 300-acre nursery, see its current seedling crop and learn about its operations.  Watch the crew in action here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrFBLsua-50.

After a picnic lunch, the group will visit White Marsh Park Edible Garden.  This example of agroforestry incorporates native fruit and nut-bearing trees and shrubs, herbaceous species, and even fungi into the landscape. A sample of some of the plants and trees located in the six plots at the garden contains blueberries, American plum, hazelnuts, paw paws, and black chokeberry.
