Leaders: Claudine L. Lebeau and Kathy Bilton
Description: Local plant enthusiasts Kathy and Claudine invite you to join them for a leisurely walk along the Snavely Ford Trail at Antietam National Battlefield. Winding through the forest and following Antietam Creek for part of the way, this scenic trail offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the woods as they transition into winter. As we walk, we’ll look for plants that hold on to their green, alongside trees and shrubs that have entered dormancy. We’ll discover the remarkable diversity of our local flora, from towering trees to smaller shrubs. Among the plants we will see there will be five species of oaks — Pin, Northern Red, Chestnut, White, and Chinkapin — along with Black Walnut, Bitternut, Pignut and Mockernut Hickories, Elms, Ashes, Red and Sugar Maples, Sycamores, Tulip Trees, Fragrant Sumac, Spicebush, Bladdernut, Witch-Hazel, and many more. Come and enjoy a peaceful walk while sharing observations. This field trip involves about 2 miles of walking on moderate terrain.
Note: Park staff could not confirm whether the portable restroom currently in the parking area will be there on the day of the walk.
