Title: MNPS Field Trip: Fort Totten

Leader: Mary Pat Rowan

We will return to FORT TOTTEN where we will concentrate on oaks. We will distinguish among many upland oaks using the bark, the twigs and the leaves, and acorns on the ground to make identifications. We also identify the other native trees and shrubs in this upland terrace-gravel forest. One of the largest amelanchiers we have seen exists on the earthen fortification, and we can search for the native mulberry that we have seen in the past.

Easy to moderate walk.

Directions: Fort Totten is on Fort Totten Dr NE, which is parallel to N Capitol St and one block to the east. It is accessible off Riggs Rd NE where you can turn south onto Ft Totten Dr NE. Meet at the Nat'l Park sign on Ft Totten Dr between Crittenden St NE and Allison St NE.

Contact: Mary Pat Rowan, blair-rowan@starpower.net, 202 526 8821.

Bring: Lunch and water. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing.

Cancelled if raining. Call Mary Pat before 9 on Sunday morning if in doubt.

Registration is not required.
